4 Business Leaders Advocate for More Women on Corporate Boards
March 2014 - Four business leaders with ties to the region have declared themselves "Champions of Change," willing to advocate to increase the number of women on corporate boards.

"All of these people have records of being active proponents of gender diversity" in their individual organizations, said Vicki Kramer, president of the Thirty Percent Coalition, a national group organizing the champions initiative. MORE

March 2014 - NEW YORK, NY – New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer announced today that Jarden Corporation and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold, Inc. recently named women to their boards of directors in response to shareowner proposals submitted by the New York City Pension Funds.  Jarden also adopted a policy on board diversity, as did CF Industries, at which the Pension Funds’ board diversity proposal received a majority vote in 2013.  Finally, Microchip Technology Incorporated, which named its first female director last fall, agreed to modify its proxy statement to reflect the board will consider ethnicity and gender, among other characteristics of diversity, in identifying and evaluating director nominees. TBC Member Sandra Beach Lin Honored By National Association Of Corporate Directors

January 2014 - The Board Connection is pleased to announce that our member Sandra Beach Lin has been selected for induction into the National Association of Corporate Directors’ (NACD) 2013 Directorship 100. Founded in 1977, NACD is the only national membership organization created by and for directors. The mission of NACD is to advance exemplary board leadership.

According to NACD, “Each year, NACD Directorship identifies the most influential people in the boardroom community, including directors, corporate governance experts, journalists, regulators and advisors. Promoting continued economic growth remains a priority for policy makers and directors alike. Therefore, our NACD Directorship 100 recognizes those who participate in actual board work and those who influence how that work is done.” Selection of the Directorship 100 begins with an online poll of all NACD members, and an advisory committee recommends 50 directors and 50 institutions to the NACD board of directors for approval. These individuals are "exemplary directors who actively pursue best practices inside their boardrooms. Directors who through their actions, deeds and words advance the cause of exemplary board performance. These attributes include board leadership, a sound ethical compass, involvement in board-related issues and activities outside of the boards on which they serve, and press and media citations.”

Since 2002, Sandra has been a member of the board of directors of WESCO International, where she currently chairs the Nominating and Governance Committee, serves on the Compensation and Executive Committees, and previously served on the Audit Committee. In addition, she currently serves on the boards of American Electric Power, Interface Biologics and PolyOne. Lin is a former President and Chief Executive Officer of Calisolar Inc.

Lin serves on the board of directors of Junior Achievement USA and has been recognized as one of the “Texas Most Powerful and Influential Women”. Sandra is also a member of the Committee of 200, Women Corporate Directors and the advisory board of the Southern Methodist University Career Development Center. Sandra Beach Lin participated in the first NACD Blue Ribbon Commission on diversity and shared her views on that important report in a 2013 meeting of The Board Connection. Her comments are featured in The Board Connection's 2012 Census Report.

Resource Published for Board Decision Makers by WCD May 2013 - WomenCorporateDirectors and its Global Nominating Commission unveiled a roadmap for decision-makers: “Improving Diverse Representation in the Boardroom,” after receiving requests for specific steps to boost women’s representation on boards worldwide. ION and Catalyst Release Reports On Percentage Of Women Executive Officers And On Boards Of Directors ION (InterOrganization Network), a national alliance of women's board advancement organizations, published its Ninth Annual Status Report on women directors and executive officers of public companies. Follow the Leaders: It CAN Happen Here profiles 11 corporations that have experienced financial success and made boardroom gender diversity a high-priority business initiative. Highlighted companies include Akamai Technologies, Alliant Energy, Cardinal Health, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store., General Motors, Hormel Foods, H&R Block, HSN, Intuit and Xerox. These featured companies - and their CEOs - are leaders in demonstrating that gender diversity in the boardroom is a strategic business imperative.

Released in conjunction with Catalyst's census of Fortune 500 corporations, the ION report summarizes data from ION member organizations in 15 U.S. metropolitan regions.

The Board Connection (TBC) joined ION in 2010. Melisa Denis, President of TBC and a KPMG Senior Partner in Dallas, commended corporate board leaders featured in the ION report, stating: "If 21st century corporate boards are to represent their shareholders, and we know that shareholder value increases on average when boards include women, then boards who pursue the appointment of qualified women show their commitment to position their companies for growth."
